Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has been widely recognised as an effective policy instrument for improving the collection and recycling of waste, encouraging more sustainable product design and supporting the transition towards a circular economy. While EPR has been adopted in an increasing number of countries, implementation approaches vary. Particularly developing countries continue to face challenges in establishing schemes, that reflect local institutional capacities, meet financing needs and collaborate with the informal sector.

This webinar will examine practical experiences from existing EPR schemes and explore the key elements that contribute to effective design, implementation, and monitoring. Particular attention will be given to lessons from both developed and developing countries, highlighting practical experiences and considerations that can support the development of effective and context-tailored EPR systems.

Webinar Objectives:

1.         Exchange on key principles for effective EPR based on country practices and learnings

2.         Demonstrate EPR’s potential and limitations based on implementing experience

The Plastic Pollution Action Dialogues, co-convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, under the Global Commitment, provide a virtual platform to exchange the latest science, national experiences, market insights and implementation learnings on tackling plastic pollution. The webinar series demonstrates what works in practice, showcasing real-world applications of policies, regulations, standards, design innovations, and technologies that are being implemented across different national contexts.
